Today, militaries all over the world rely on satellites for command and control, communication, monitoring, early warning, and navigation with the Global Positioning System. Militarization of outer space: Space has been militarized since the earliest communication satellites were launched. One key element, however, is the distinction between the militarization and weaponization of outer space: The United States argues that the inability to define space weapons is the main barrier to a treaty that prevents them. It does not take more than a tiny rock (or a random piece of space debris) to destroy important satellites or other devices.
